SUPPORTING AAPI

STOP ASIAN HATE

A STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF ASIAN AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS

The leadership of Theatre@First are horrified by the March 16 murders of eight people at spas in Atlanta and by the increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout the United States by more than 150% over the past year.

Together we mourn the loss of the six women who were targeted for their race, gender, and employment. We also mourn the two other victims and hope for the full recovery of the surviving injured bystander.

We are particularly concerned at this time for the Asian American and Pacific Islander artists and other participants, audience members, and friends within our community who feel the impact of these events most sharply.  Theatre@First is a strong community, full of care and support for all of our AAPI members in the face of bigotry, hatred, and violence.  We see you, we love you, and you are not alone.

Actions

We are working to better support our community and nurture equality, diversity and inclusion within our organization. We welcome your feedback and leadership as we work toward creating anti-racist theatre and community together. Our efforts to date have centered around:

  1. Forming an Anti-Racist Change Committee (ARCC) to connect with other theatres; share links to amplify anti-racist voices; and review all of Theatre@First’s policies through an anti-racist lens, addressing script selection, audition and staffing policies, ticket programs, diverse leadership, and increased transparency throughout our operations.

  2. Engaging in an Anti-Racism Learning Process to educate our participants on issues, resources and solutions.

  3. Launching All the World’s a Stage discussion group and A Wider Shelf reading circle to encourage our community to broaden our knowledge and understanding of scripts by BIPOC, AAPI, and LGBT+ playwrights whose work has been under-represented on our stage.
